Splash into Summer

Summer is here and Teddy and I are ready for some California fun!

molly signature

Shown here is his friend and neighbor, Molly, modeling our ‘Summer Fun’ smocked dress available this week at Muttropolis Fashion Island, La Jolla and Solana Beach. Here are some hot summer fashion tips for your fur baby:

While the weather is still warming up, consider a fun floral dress or tank top for your pet, to steal the show, when you are out and about shopping or lunching especially in outdoor malls like Fashion Island in Newport Beach, or wherever you are! As the weather gets warmer, hairbows, collar clips, bow ties and bandanas are fun accents for your fur babies.

Make sure to stay cool with lots of water, shade and early morning walks.  Have your own pool?  Throw a pool party this summer, inviting all of your fur baby’s besties with the perfect doggie desert-popsicles!  All you have to do is freeze your choice of broth (ex. chicken or beef), pour into a popsicle mold, use a dog friendly jerky as the stick and voila, you have a fun and creative treat that is time consuming for your dog (but wasn’t for you!)

There are so many fun things to do this summer!  Teddy loves BBQing (he’s a meat and potatoes kind of guy) and any kind of water adventures.

A great activity to do with your bestie over the summer is camping.  Teddy and I recently went shopping at REI and checked out the tents and chairs for our next trip. He loved this little chair

The tent was the perfect size for both of us! However, most pet friendly campgrounds are for people with campers or RVs (you have to go further north to be able to pitch a tent right on the beach with your dog).  Check out (877-411-FIDO) which is a great resource for both campgrounds and pet friendly hotels throughout the United States. Remember, the safest campground for small dogs is the beach, free of bears and other critters!

teddy essentials

Teddy has a checklist of essential items to pack when we are camping together; water, medication, a cozy matt to sleep on, food, treats, a frisbee, a ball, toys, a brush (for long haired dogs especially if you are near water), an extra towel, a leash and harness.  I recently did a pinterest board on camping with your dog with ideas for fun activities.  To connect to it for other ideas go to:

Another fantastic idea to explore this summer is surfing!  If your dog is an adrenaline junkie that loves the water, give Surf City Surf Dogs a call for lessons! Check out this link to book an appointment: . You can take lessons with a friend like Joey did:

And then enter their surf contest alone!

This guy looks so much like Teddy, that I think if Teddy was younger we would go for it!  Whatever you choose to do, have fun and make some great memories…

Happy Summer!

Teddy’s Organic Garden

Teddy was diagnosed in March with congestive heart failure. As a part of his treatment, we decided to add more veggies to his diet. We started looking into planting a garden. Our plantable yard is small so we also looked into vertical planting, raised beds and hanging plants. Here are our ideas so far:

Teddy is getting ready for our adventure!

First decide what you are going to plant.

pet safe fruit and veggies
Here is a list of safe and off limits fruits and vegetables from the ASPCA

Then decide how you are going to garden.

vertical gardening
Vertical and planter box gardening is very popular right now if you don’ t have a lot of space. This really works for smaller yards

planter beds
If you are planting veggies, I love these wine crates for a shabby chic look

Another great idea for herbs (maybe just for you) is to plant them in antique metal tea canisters:herbs in tea canisters

This is a nifty way to organize your seed packets. Just put them in ziplock baggies with paper inside letting you know when they were purchased and what they are. Or you can purchase 4” starter plants to get going. organize seed packets

This stone markers will keep you organized until things start poping up! It’s a creative and fun project for a Saturday morning:

Finally, when things start to grow, let your best friend enjoy the fruits of your labor!asparagus snack

Or not!

Just for fun, you can create veggie sculptures honoring your pal, at your next party!

Happy Gardening!

5 Tips For Keeping Dogs Safe This Summer

5 Tips for Dogs Summer

5 Tips for Dogs Summer

Summer is here and a great time to be outdoors with our pets. Heat can be a challenge for our dogs. As the days heat up it is important to be pro-active in taking extra special care of our dogs.

    1. Exercise early or late in the day. Summer is a great time to take our pets outdoors but it can be hard get too hard during the peak hours of the day. Walk them early in the morning or the end of the day when it has cooled down. Make sure to have water with you on extended walks.
    2. Avoid Heatstroke When a dog’s temperature rises dangerously high they can experience heat stroke. This is most common when dogs are left in a car for too long or when they exercise in the heat.Remember, never leave your dog in the car on a hot day. When they are outside make sure they have access to shade. Keep Them Cool Inside If the house is too warm for you, it is too warm for our dogs. Leave the air on if you will be gone for several hours.
    3. Keep Them Hydrated It is important dogs get plenty of fresh, cold water on hot days. Bring water with you on walks and in the car. Add a couple of ice cubes to the water through out the day.
    4. Protect Their Paws Avoid walking your dogs on hot sidewalks. They temperatures can climb quite high and burn their foot pads.
    5. Sunburn Did you know that dogs can get sunburned too? Especially white, light-colored dogs. To prevent sunburn, apply a waterproof sunscreen that has been formulated for babies or pets. Don’t forget the tips of your dogs ears and nose.

The Dog Squad Fall Photo Shoot

Last week we held a little photo shoot. Our fall line is almost here and we wanted to give you a sneak peak. What? A photo shoot of sweaters and blankets in August outside. Yes, it was a bit crazy, but we have also had a mild summer. We have so many fun new additions to the Dog Squad line and can’t wait to show them to you. Our trio of models were troopers, but Teddy was protesting a bit! The indignity of putting him in pink!

No worries, we took care of our pampered models. After each shot we went inside for a drink and treat!

Our fall sweaters include a soft, Green Camouflage sweater, a Seafoam Green Ombre Turtleneck and Seafoam Green Leopard Mockneck Sweater. Your dogs will be styling in the years hottest color. Our luxurious plush cozy and blankets will pamper your dogs on cool nights.

We have lots of pink for the girls! Mocha and Maddie cozied up in our Pink Shag and Pink Leopard cozy. Don’t they look sweet? They are modeling our Pink Sequined Sweater.

Of course, it would not be a photo shoot without them kissing! Maddie is always making sure Mocha is cleaned up and looking pretty!

The real story that day was the mad crush Mocha has on Teddy. She follows him all around the yard as he tries his hardest to ditch her. Maddie is her protective big sis who barks at him for ignoring her!
